My Discovery Years: August 2012 - July 2013

My first foray with apps was to get students to create video - perfect way to get students to speak in French; revolutionised the way I could get students to practice their speaking skills

Initially I set up a class Padlet Wall and eventually we moved to each student creating their own wall and then sharing the link on our main class wall

My first attempt at creating a Google site

iPads
As a languages teacher I quickly saw the potential of using iPads to get students recording audio and Puppet Pals was probably one of the first apps I really relied upon. I then discovered Padlet as a platform where we could share these videos. At this stage I also started to use Edmodo to stay in touch with students and to share links with them. I created my first Educreations tutorial on the past tense in French and was able to flip my lesson for the Yr8's. So, from an early stage I was aware that I did not want tech to be just an add-on, it had to acheive a goal that I could not have achieved by other means. The recording of role plays instead of live performances saved me so much class time and the students were much more engaged by the whole experience; this was particularly good for my shy students who suddenly lost the fear of having to perform in front of an audience. Peer feedback was a lot richer too as students did not know what to expect from the videos they were going to watch.

After an inset with Joe Dale I discovered the power of creating multi media books with students

Getting students to create comic strips was a fantastic way of them showing me what they had learnt; they were able to apply their learning in such creative ways

Google Summit, Twitter, Joe Dale
Attending a GAFE summit, joining Twitter and an inset delivered by Joe Dale all went a long way towards helping me to consider with thought and reflection how best to integrate tech tools into my teaching and learning environment. The following have been instrumental in guiding my learning; by following their examples I have been able to integrate technology into my teaching and learning environment to ensure that it has a powerful impact on students' learning. I am grateful to Med Kharbach, Kathy Schrock, Richard Byrne, Sylvia Duckworth, Susan Oxnevad, Justin Tarte, Vicki Davis, Silvia Tolisano, UKedchat, Teacher Toolkit, Kasey Bell, aitsl, Alice Keeler and Kathy Elliott for endlessly sharing all their good work and for getting me onto such a strong start. Technology is a tool that can create high impact instruction environments and these people have been instrumental in showing me how.

Creating, Sharing & Presenting
This really is the year of own personal growth as I gain more confidence in leading workshops, participating, moderating and leading chats on Twitter, supporting KS4 to create their e-portfolios and of course start blogging! I aim to use this platform as a reflection, a timeline and also of course to share work in the hope that I, in turn, may be able to inspire other educators.
